Nova Legacy Golf Classic
Hosted by 1985 National Champions.
VILLANOVA, Pa. (June 12, 2010) – Whenever a group of Villanova alumni get together for reminiscing past accomplishments, the topic of conversation usually gets around to the remarkable 1985 NCAA Championship basketball victory over Georgetown in Lexington, Kentucky.
That has been the major theme for this entire year, the 25th anniversary of what many consider to be one of the greatest upsets in sports history. An exclamation point is being placed at the end of the year of celebration with the Nova Legacy Golf Classic, to be held on Monday, June 21 at the Seaview Golf Resort in Absecon, New Jersey. It will be preceded by a pairings party at the Borgata Casino Hotel and Spa on Sunday night, June 20.
Dennis McKithen, also a 1985 Villanova graduate, has assumed the position of executive director for the event and has played the role of pied piper in attracting so many of the players and coaches from the championship team.
“We have a great cause involved with the tournament and we knew that making the championship team hosts of the event would start us on the right foot,” explained McKithen. He has created the DCM Foundation for Entrepreneurship in Education, a 501 (C) 3 non-profit organization, and installed it as the beneficiary of the event. Funds will be channeled to Villanova University and the Blue White Scholarship Foundation for use in supplying scholarships.
Rollie Massimino, head coach of the 1985 team, will be present at Seaview to lead his former players. Ed Pinckney, star center on the ’85 team, will be one of the few players not in attendance because he is coaching an international team in Egypt. However he was quick to say, “It has been an unbelievable year, the way that so many people have come out to events to honor our team. This should be a nice way to end the year of celebrations and I know the other players are looking forward to it. I’m just sorry I can’t attend, but I will be there in spirit.”
Alliances have been forged with the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority and Yuengling Brewery in an effort to establish the event as a major attraction in the Atlantic City area, as well as a tournament that will attract players from the Greater Philadelphia area and the Mid-Atlantic region. The event will be played on the Pines Course at Seaview, the day following the final round of the ShopRite LPGA Classic is played on Seaview’s Bay Course.
A preview of the event and all of the celebrities who will be on hand for one final 25th anniversary celebration will take place when the Saturday, June 13 edition of the GolfTalk Live radio show broadcasts live from Seaview. McKithen, as well as interviews with other celebrities, will be a focal point of the show as the LPGA players play the second round of their tournament. The show airs from 7 to 8 a.m. on WNTP 990-AM in Philadelphia and on www.wntp.com. The show also can be heard via podcast beginning Sunday, June 20 on this website.
“The Atlantic City area will be focused on golf all week and we hope to add a great ending to it,” said McKithen. “People are excited about spending a day with some of the legendary names like Coach Massimino, Harold Pressley, Harold Jensen, Gary McClain and the rest.”
Reservations for the event are being handled by calling 610-519-0777 or by e-mailing novalegacygolfouting@gmail.com. For more information about the Nova Legacy Golf Classic, contact TL Golf Services at 610-279-9220.

Montgomery County Amateur Championship
Awards Scholarships to Weiss, Cavalcante.
NORRISTOWN, Pa. (April 19, 2010) – Jach Weiss, a senior at Wissahickon High School, and Nicole Cavalcante, a senior at Kennedy-Kenrick High School, have been selected to receive Harry Mirabile Memorial Scholarships from the Montgomery County Amateur Championship.
The two golfers competed in last year’s Montgomery County Junior Championship and supplied personal resumes to a committee of judges. The scholarships are awarded each year based on academics, sportsmanship and service to the community. This was the third year in the eight-year history of the event that two Harry Mirabile Memorial scholarships were awarded.
Funds for the scholarships come from the Dave Marshall Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is augmented each year through entry fees in the Montgomery County Amateur Championship, sponsorships, contributions, special events and a raffle.
Competitors in the Junior Championships are then urged to submit their personal resumes for consideration for the Harry Mirabile Memorial Scholarships.
Scholarships are awarded to the winners of the Montgomery County Junior Championships. Roger Cohn and Louis Hoffman, both members of Blue Bell CC and friends of the late Dave Marshall, co-chair the scholarship committee.
“Due to the economy, sponsorship levels were down for the second year in a row but I was most pleased that we were able to maintain the same scholarship amounts and award scholarships to both a boy and a girl from the county again this year,” said Hoffman. “Each year we get some outstanding applicants for the scholarships.”
Both Marshall and Mirabile were patrons of junior golf in Montgomery County.
Cavalcante, who also won the Montgomery County Girls Championship this year, is a four-sport star at Kennedy Kenrick. She earned 12 varsity letters in her high school career, including three in golf. She is President of Student Council and, despite her busy school and athletic schedule, is deeply involved in community service projects. Academically, she carries a 3.5 grade point average and is in the final stages of sorting college scholarship offers before continuing her golf career at the next level.
Weiss is a three-sport star at Wissahickon, competing in ice hockey and lacrosse as well as golf. He captained the ice hockey team this year, as well as serving as captain on the golf team, qualifying for the state competition for the second year in a row and being named Player of the Year by coaches in Wissahickon’s division.
A solid student, he achieved Honor Roll status all four years at Wissahickon and received the Future Business Leaders of America Leadership Award. Weiss still finds time outside his three-sport schedule to do community service and this year served as Chairman of the Wissahickon Wing Bowl, a tradition that began in 2006 and raises funds for charities. Under his leadership the event raised more than $3,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Association. In the fall Weiss will matriculate at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana and major in business.

GolfTalk Live Radio Show
Receives ING Outstanding Achievement Award.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (February 1, 2010) – For the third time in the last four years, the GolfTalk Live radio show has been honored as one of the top golf radio shows in America by the International Network of Golf. At the annual Media Awards presentation by the International Network of Golf during the recent PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, GolfTalk Live received the prestigious Outstanding Achievement Award in the radio category.
GolfTalk Live received similar awards in 2006 and 2007, while being named the No. 1 Golf Radio Show in America in 2008.
In addition, show host Tony Leodora won another Outstanding Achievement Award for Opinion Column in the writing category. His column, “The Cheesesteak Open”, a tongue-in-cheek humorous piece about how Philadelphia should host its own PGA Tour event with sponsorship money coming from the city-wide sale of cheesesteaks, appeared in the GolfStyles Philadelphia magazine and in the Blog section of the radio show website, www.golftalklive.net.
The two awards single out Leodora as the only media member to win an award in two different categories of the ING Media Awards – radio and writing.
“The awards are special because it allows me to share the recognition with all of the talented people who go into making the radio show a success,” commented Leodora. “In a span of four years, the show has grown incredibly in its reach and listener loyalty. We have proven that golf on the radio can be a winner, if presented in the proper format.”
GolfTalk Live airs 52 weeks a year from 7 to 8 a.m. each Saturday on WNTP 990-AM and on www.wntp.com. It also can be heard any time during the week after the show airs, by going to the website, www.golftalklive.net.

The announcement came from Ken Selinger, owner of CCI Video, the company that produces the Inside Golf show.

We all like to discover new courses to play and gain first-hand knowledge of new golf resorts. If we can’t do it personally, at least we can do it vicariously through Inside Golf.”
